How to Add Amla to Your Daily Routine

Jotinder Kaur · Co-founder, HanJot Farms 28 June 2026 4 min read

Amla is the most underrated fruit on our farm. It is sour enough to make you blink, and it has more vitamin C than almost anything else grown in India. The trick is not willpower — it is finding a way to eat it that you will actually keep up.

Key takeaways

  • A single amla can have more vitamin C than several oranges.
  • Raw amla with salt in the morning is the simplest daily habit.
  • Powder is easy for travel. Candy is good for children. Pickle goes well with meals.
  • Avoid boiling it — heat destroys most of the vitamin C.

Start with the raw fruit

Cut one amla into pieces, sprinkle some rock salt, and eat it before breakfast. The sourness fades in a minute and leaves a sweet taste after — that is a sign of good, fresh fruit. This is how the older generation in our village has always eaten it.

Juice for the mornings you are rushing

Blend two amla with a glass of water, strain lightly, and drink it fresh. Add a little honey if it feels too sour at first — most people stop needing it after two weeks.

Do not heat the juice, and do not store it overnight. Vitamin C breaks down fast, so make it and drink it right away.

Powder for consistency

Shade-dried amla powder is the easiest form to carry around. A teaspoon in warm water, in a smoothie, or mixed into curd works well. It is also what most families use for hair and scalp care.

Candy and pickle for the rest of the family

Children rarely like raw amla. Lightly sweetened, sun-dried amla candy solves that, with no artificial colour. A spoon of homestyle amla pickle with rice also turns the habit into part of a meal instead of a chore.

A simple week to begin with

If you are starting from zero, this simple plan works well for most families:

  • Monday to Friday: one raw amla with salt before breakfast.
  • Weekends: fresh amla juice instead, for a change.
  • Travel days: a teaspoon of amla powder in warm water.
  • With meals: a small serving of amla pickle two or three times a week.
